Ancient English legend. The early Middle Ages: Lady Godiva was a noblewoman, who according to the legend, took pity on the people of Coventry, who were suffering grievously under her husband's oppressive taxation, and rode naked through the streets of Coventry, in England, in order to gain a remission of the oppressive taxation imposed by her husband on his tenants.
