In the wake of a worldwide disaster that brought war and disease to Los Angeles, a group of strangers seeks shelter from a severe windstorm. The irony is, they might have been safer had they chosen to stay out in the elements. Lurking inside the shelter with them is something far more dangerous than the chaos waiting outside.

The ambitious Isabell supports her, although she secretly pursues her own goals. The impulsive Ari comes to riding training in Kaltenbach, where she develops a special relationship with Windstorm, the eponymous horse of the film series, and she also makes friends with Mika.
