•Following celebrated productions of Prokofiev's 'Semyon Kotko' and Shchedrin's 'The Left-Hander', Valery Gergiev continues his survey of uniquely Russian works with 'The Golden Cockerel', Rimsky-Korsakov s final and, arguably, most mysterious opera. This vibrant new production mixes live action with CGI, and is the vision of Anna Matison, an acclaimed playwright, script-writer, film director and producer. 'The Golden Cockerel' was Matison s directorial debut with the Mariinsky, and saw her also take on the roles of production and costume designer. The melodious nature, beauty and leitmotifs of the plot are underscored by the production designs; the opera uses pantomime and masquerades, while the sets utilised 3D video projections.

Jonas Kaufmann: Dolce Vita
JK's is definitely in love with Italy; not only is he fluent in Italian but he sings here traditional songs some of which are in the Napolitanean dialect and he is good at it. There are wonderful views of the Italian coastline with Jonas driving an iconic Alfa. There are bits of black and white film from his childhood spending holidays in Italyas a boy. The audience adores him and his voice soars easily as such songs are easy on someone used to much heavier Verdi or Wagner roles. A delight to the ear.

Medical science saw different. Now decades later Cathy is freed, relocated to her own flat and given a chance to be independent. Once alone things are not what they all seem and when her nightmares turn real she questions her state of mind before she is left to face her demons.

Return is a methodical construction of the approach of an individual towards an unseen goal, which assumes metaphorical significance. Viola moves toward the camera/viewer, pausing every few steps to ring a bell, at which point he is momentarily thrust back to his starting place, and then advanced again. Finally reaching his destination, he is taken through all of the previous stages in a single instant and returned to the source of his journey.
