At the same time it also becomes not only the reflection of a daughter but of an entire generation, about the feelings of abandoment, abscense, the tragedy, the exile and death. Annita Malavasi was just 22 when the Germans occupied Italy, their former allies, in 1943. As a partisan in the Italian resistance named “Laila”, she moved throughout the Apennines with and between fighting units, delivering information, transporting weapons, and taking part in battles. She spent over a year in the Apennines, fighting against the German occupation. At the same time, she had to assert herself against the men of the mountain villages. By the end of the war, Laila had risen among the ranks to become one of the few female commanders in the Italian resistance. This film chronicles the story of a lifelong struggle for emancipation that began with the battle for Italy’s liberation from fascism. Laila and her two comrades, Gina “Sonia” Moncigoli and Pierina “Iva” Bonilauri talk about their time in the Resistenza and what it meant to them and many other women.

Grapefruit

1988

With an all-female cast, featuring Suzie Bright as John Lennon, Cecilia Dougherty's Grapefruit plays with the romanticized history of the iconic Fab Four, gently mocking John and Yoko’s banal squabbles and obsessive rituals of self-display. Based obliquely on Yoko Ono’s book, the piece works on many levels to reposition this mythic tale of the Beatles by casting '80s women in mod drag—effectively mapping the lesbian sub-culture onto heterosexual mass culture. Discounting the importance of reproducing facts and historical accuracy, Dougherty gives an incisive reading of the creation of pop culture icons: it doesn’t matter who plays John Lennon because ultimately John Lennon is not a person anymore. As a star, he is a projection of our society’s collective needs and desires.

June 1944 : In the midst of the Liberation, 800 deportees were transported from French camps to Germany. Due to the Allies’ bombing and Resistants’ attacks, the railway was in such bad shape that the journey across France took 57 days. The deportees even had to walk at some occasions and were seen by several eye witnesses. The journey ended in Dachau and more than half of the deportees never came back. This story is unique, because of the incredibly long voyage that made many people witness the deportations towards German camps, usually made « invisible ». The film, based on the eye witnesses’ evidence and on the deportees’ own letters, ask us, « What would we have done in a similar situation today ? ».
