His mentor was Pyotr Demyanovich Volovich, who knew how to make money by "left trips" and various "operations". Lyonka saw that Volovich lived widely, beyond his means, but at first he somehow did not think about the sources of wealth. Apparently because he was in love with Volovich's daughter Lyusya.
