São José do Vale do Rio Preto, 1940. The coffee plantation is depleted, generating consequences for the region: with the decay, commercial houses are closed, railroads are removed and farms are abandoned. The former source of income for that population since the end of the 19th century has given way to poultry farming, which is gradually developing into a new economic cycle, despite the fear of those who still live in the city and in the village of Tristão Câmara.

The Southern Contest Myth
Image of a cinematic camera, described off by a female voice. Two students talk about film school. In a classroom, students stand up, one by one, attack and murder a classmate; the wallets fill up with corpses. A boy dances naked in front of a screen on which different images are projected. At the top of a platform, a man in a suit speaks to two naked young men who crawl across the floor. Two boys with clown makeup shed tears looking at the camera. Then they get in a car. Red spots explode and spread slowly across the screen.
Terrorists in Retirement
Not just another documentary on the French resistance movement, this film focuses on one particular group of underground fighters in France: those from Eastern Europe. Many were Jews and all had fled their native countries before the war broke out. They were among the most staunch and fearless enemies of fascism, as shown here in personal interviews and memoirs of war-time experiences. But the most famous of these immigrants were 23 who were rounded up among several hundred Parisians in 1943, tried for their activities, and executed -- all were immigrants under the leadership of the Armenian poet Manouchian. After their execution, Paris was papered with posters decrying these 23 martyrs as "foreign communists."
