The Forest

The Forest is both a vibrantly spontaneous and brutally funny family drama, and a glorious tribute to acting and theater - in other words, an Arnaud Desplechin film. A Male

Carlos lives in a boarding school in the centre of Bogotá and longs to spend Christmas with his family. Esteban, a writer of mistery novels, must finish his new work, so, looking for inspiration moves to an isolated cabin in the woods with his wife, Cristina, and his male secretary, Federico. Secretly, Federico had been renting the cabin to a mysterious woman who is urged by him to leave the house before Esteban and Cristina arrive. While leaving, the woman decides to keep one awkward thing inside the house.

This reel consists of three short films, two in black and white and one in color, that treat of a water wheel on the Sorgue. The essence of the work rests on a series of cross-references that are set up between the operational mechanisms of the filmed object and the recorded characteristics foregrounded by the choice of film stocks and filming circumstances. Deep in the forest a group of five friends wander around like a lion herd. Lost in their word games, they play and seduce each other while going back and forth into adulthood territory, in a desperate search to avoid their already written story.

In 1912 Jasset turned from fantasy and spectacle to realism in making the first of two Zola adaptations, as part of Éclair's new series of social dramas. For Au pays des ténèbres, based on Germinal, he took his crew to Charleroi in Belgium to film in authentic locations, and although he updated the story to the present, he went to great lengths to recreate in the studio the detail of the actual mining galleries, exploiting the ability of film to be a recorder of contemporary reality.

Kitsune no homerun-ô

To the modern eye, this postwar Japanese cartoon is a transitional piece, from the Japanese-mythos story to the modern anime style. The linkag to the older style can be detected in the teams being the rabbits versus the foxes, with the sympathetic character being a fox -- indeed, except for that bit of fantasy, this could have been a live action short.
